20/100 · Beperkt aantoonbaar resultaat
Status as of 18 October 2026: the campaign is still running. Greenpeace Netherlands has moved beyond supporter mobilisation and filed a 22 July 2026 petition at the Amsterdam District Court seeking preliminary evidence/disclosure from JBS, as preparation for a possible merits case concerning climate, biodiversity and human-rights risks, including the Nigeria expansion. This is a real legal procedural development, but no published court order requiring disclosure, no merits judgment, and no announced halt to the Nigeria plans were located. JBS formally rejected Greenpeace’s pre-litigation demands and maintains that its expansion supports food security and complies with applicable law. The original goal of stopping the Nigeria expansion has therefore not been achieved; the accountability goal has been partially advanced only in the sense that JBS has been publicly and legally challenged and has formally responded.
- Het resultaat kan reëel zijn, maar de specifieke bijdrage van Greenpeace is minder zeker.

Feiten en onzekerheden
Bevestigd
- Greenpeace Netherlands served JBS with an information request on 30 April 2026 and JBS replied on 21 May 2026 refusing the request.
- On 22 July 2026, Greenpeace Netherlands filed a petition seeking preliminary evidence/disclosure from JBS at the Amsterdam District Court; Greenpeace describes this as preparation for a possible later merits case.
- JBS’s official 2024 Nigeria announcement described a proposed US$2.5 billion, five-year plan for six facilities.
- JBS has not agreed to Greenpeace’s requested disclosures in its 21 May 2026 response.
- No source reviewed establishes that the Nigeria expansion has been stopped, that JBS has been found liable, or that a court has compelled JBS to disclose the requested information.
Onzeker
- No published Amsterdam District Court ruling, hearing date, disclosure order, or dismissal in the Greenpeace-JBS preliminary-evidence matter was located as of 18 October 2026. The filing itself is documented, but the subsequent procedural status is not independently confirmed by a court publication in the sources reviewed.
- No reliable evidence was located that JBS has cancelled, suspended, started construction of, or operationalised any of the six planned Nigerian facilities.
- Whether Greenpeace’s requested material will be ordered, and whether Greenpeace will subsequently bring a merits action seeking to stop or alter JBS’s expansion, remains unresolved.
- The environmental and human-rights impacts alleged by Greenpeace have not been adjudicated in this Dutch proceeding.
Tegenstrijdig / afwijkend
- Greenpeace alleges that JBS’s planned expansion, including Nigeria, risks climate damage, biodiversity loss and harms to vulnerable groups, and says disclosure is needed to assess a future liability case. These are allegations in Greenpeace’s petition, not court findings.
- JBS says it complies with laws and regulations, is positioned to support food security and local food independence, and argues that Greenpeace has no right to use Dutch courts to dictate policy in Nigeria.
- JBS describes its Nigeria plan as sustainable supply-chain development that would support local producers; Nigerian civil-society groups reported continuing concerns that key agreements and environmental/social assessments have not been made public.
Tijdlijn
-
Nigeria expansion remains proposed; no halt established
JBS’s official Nigeria agreement remains a proposed five-year US$2.5 billion investment plan for six facilities. A Nigerian investment agency had previously facilitated a JBS fact-finding mission, while a September 2026 Nigerian civil-society coalition still described the investment as proposed and sought publication of the agreement and assessments.
-
Greenpeace files preliminary-evidence/disclosure petition
Greenpeace Netherlands submitted a petition to the Amsterdam District Court under Article 196 Dutch Code of Civil Procedure, requesting documents, witness examinations and/or expert evidence. The stated purpose is to assess and substantiate a possible subsequent merits case; it is not itself a judgment stopping the expansion.
-
JBS rejects Greenpeace pre-litigation request
JBS formally rejected Greenpeace’s information demands. It characterised them as an impermissible fishing expedition, disputed Greenpeace’s asserted right to influence JBS strategy, and said the request did not identify concrete legal obligations allegedly breached.
-
Information request served at JBS shareholder meeting
Greenpeace activists disrupted JBS’s first shareholder meeting in the Netherlands and served an information request seeking material on climate, nature, human-rights impacts and expansion plans.

JBS’s 21 May 2026 response confirms receipt of Greenpeace’s demands to halt expansion, including Nigeria, and rejects the requested disclosures. JBS says it complies with laws, frames its work as supporting food security, and argues Greenpeace’s request lacks a concrete legal basis and amounts to fishing for information.
Nigeria’s investment-promotion agency reported that it led a JBS delegation on a fact-finding mission in February 2025 and that JBS was exploring integrated poultry farms, cattle ranches/clusters and a pig farm. This corroborates that the investment process continued after the 2024 memorandum, but is not evidence of completed construction.
JBS announced a memorandum with Nigeria for a five-year US$2.5 billion investment plan including six facilities—three poultry, two cattle and one pork—and presented the plan as supporting food security, local supply chains and small producers. It is evidence that the expansion plan existed; it does not establish that facilities were built.
Reports that a Nigerian coalition in September 2026 continued to describe JBS’s US$2.5 billion investment as proposed, called for publication of the agreement and environmental/social assessments, and raised concerns about community consultation. This corroborates continuing scrutiny in Nigeria but does not prove Greenpeace caused it or prove the alleged harms.
A Netherlands climate-litigation overview independently notes that Greenpeace sent JBS notice in April 2026, that JBS responded in May, and that Greenpeace announced litigation on 22 July 2026. It also notes legal uncertainty around corporate climate claims, which supports a cautious assessment of the case’s prospects.
Greenpeace announced that it had filed the Amsterdam petition after JBS did not comply with its earlier information request. It states that a possible subsequent lawsuit would depend on obtaining the requested information. This is evidence of Greenpeace’s activity and claim, rather than independent proof of liability or causal impact.
The filed petition is dated 22 July 2026, addressed to the Amsterdam District Court and seeks preliminary evidence under Article 196 Rv from JBS. It expressly says Greenpeace is preparing a possible merits action and requests information, witness evidence and/or expert evidence; it is not a court decision. Greenpeace requests disclosure relevant to the Nigerian memorandum and broader expansion plans.
